JAYC 100: The 2010s

This is the eighth weekly installment about the history of JAYC, leading up to the JAYC100 Celebration at AYC later in June.

The 2010s were a particularly exciting decade for JAYC, as Sailing Director Kevin Broome joined AYC in 2010 and oversaw several strategic changes. Under Kevin’s leadership (with the support of course of AYC flag officers, trustees, and the always under-recognized parent volunteers!) JAYC offerings were expanded, with the goal of ensuring that sailors could get as much as possible out of their time on the water. JAYCers began sailing O’Pen Bics (2011), Hobies (2015), and RS Fevas (2017) in addition to Optimists, Lasers/ILCAs, and 420s. Adventure sailing was developed and JAYC began offering windsurfing, stand-up paddleboard, STEAM classes, and other on-the-water pursuits. AYC’s junior big boat program continued to expand with the acquisition of Young American. While many sailors continued to thrive on the racecourse, others developed a lifelong love of being on the water that was less of a competitive endeavor.

While the traditions of seamanship, sportsmanship, and camaraderie remained strong, JAYC also continued the tradition of speed and smarts on the racecourse. Michelle Lahrkamp and Gabby DelBello won JSA 420 Champs in 2016 and went on to win US Sailing Youth Champs in 2018. In the 2010s, AYC was dominant in the Laser and Laser Radial classes, with championships from P.D. Duncan (2012), Will McKeige (2013 and 2014), John McCarthy (2019), Sam Papert (2012), Collin Alexander (2014), Leyton Borcherding (2018), and Andrew Powers (2019). Clark Morris won the JSA Optimist Championship in 2018. JAYCers won the Clinton Bell JSA Season Trophy in 2012 and 2013 (Jared Gaynes and Alexandra del Bello) and 2019 (Andrew Powers). Megan Ploch (2015), Lindsay Powers (2016), Madelyn Ploch (2017), and Maddy Saffer (2019) teamed up to ensure that AYC was the dominant club in the JSA Girls Championship.  In 2010, Taegan Blackwell and Aisling Quirke won the JSA Pixel Championship and the Pixel Season Trophy. Eric Dowd and Nick Hein won the JSA Pixel Season Trophy again in 2014. Once again, the depth of sailing talent at JAYC was clear – and particularly evident by wins in the MacIntyre Team Race Championship (2014 and 2015) and the numerous accomplishments that the AYC Junior Big Boat program accumulated on Young American.
